Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and is the most populated town in that Country.
Vilnius is in the South-east of Lithuania, at the confluence of the Rivers Vilnia and Neris. Its peripheral position with respect to the rest of the Country is a consequence of the history and alteration of the boundaries over the centuries.
Once it was in the centre - not only cultural but also geographical – of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the beginning it also had a central position in the area occupied by the Lithuanian settlements, even if the town population has been multiethnic for most of its history.
