Standing on a hill 7 km from the coast, it is the southernmost town of the province of Ragusa.
The municipal area includes the Isola dei Porri, barely wider than a rock, a destination for diving excursions. The main monuments have the characteristic of being built or re-built after the devastating earthquake of 1693: the Church of S.Maria Maggiore, the Church of S.Maria dell’Annunziata, St.Bartholomew’s Mother Church, Palazzo Bruno di Belmonte (in liberty style), housing the Town Hall.
