Brest is a French seaport located in the Finistère department in Brittany on the West coast. It hosts the headquarters of the most important military naval base in France. This city was founded in the 3rd century by the Romans, who built the first stronghold. During the Carolingian dynasty (from the 6th to the 10th century) a castle was erected on the ruins of the Roman stronghold.
