Sterea Ellada (Central Greece) is the central region and one of the most mountainous districts in Greece. Arachova is a mountain town clinging to the slopes of Mount Parnaso with a deep traditional flavour, houses, and the Byzantine monastery of Osios Loukas in the eastern area. Thiva is a modern town built on a fertile plain of great archaeological interest (the ancient Thebes) and Byzantine churches. Its picturesque capital, Amfissa, has been built among mountain slopes and is surmounted by a Frankish castle, surrounded by olive trees.
